Summary: The reading of the vulnerability from an integrating perspective allows an analysis of the
changes in the Environmental Protection Area (APA) in Conceição da Barra, on the north coast
of the state of Espírito Santo (Brazil) in view of the various pressures exerted on it. Knowledge
about these issues is pertinent to environmental landscape planning, as it makes it possible to
identify places WHERE these pressures have the potential to cause greater degradation to the
landscapes. In this context, the present research has as main objective to evaluate the
vulnerabilities of the Conceição da Barra APA, using geotechnologies such as GIS and SR
and the field validation for the proposal of environmental zoning integrated to the coastal
zoning, on a scale of 1: 45,000. The theoretical affiliation of this research is in line with the
systems vision, a conception spread both in geography and in other fields of knowledge. In
research involving surveys relevant to coastal vulnerability, it is common for data to come from
various meteorological and oceanographic events. It was decided to hold a single event. Such
methodology appropriated variables for the Coastal Vulnerability Index, making it possible and
compatible with this integrative look, albeit from the perspective of this single event. The first
results indicate that the ES-010 highway cuts through areas with high environmental and
coastal vulnerability. The beaches, the mangroves, the swamps, the paludosa forest, part of
the sandbanks, the streams and the banks of the São Mateus river inside this conservation
unit were classified as vulnerable. More than 50% of the total area of the APA is classified as
a high and very high conservation priority. The aim of this research is to help possible actions
and new studies that offer a better ordering of the Environmental Protection Areas located on
coastal plains.
